We knit this two-piece lounge set as a pair from one dye lot so the stripes line up cleanly across the pullover and trousers. The top is cut loose with a round crew neckline and batwing sleeves. Below, the trousers pull on with an elasticated waistband and fall straight through a wide leg.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crew neck and stripe. The horizontal stripes run straight across the chest and into the dropped sleeve. A ribbed band finishes the round crewneck so it stays flat against the collarbone without stretching out over time.
  • Batwing sleeve cut. We shaped the top with a low armhole and full batwing sleeve. The knit tapers down to a close-fitting ribbed cuff that stays put at the wrist when you push your sleeves up.
  • Wide leg trouser. The matching pants have a flat elastic waistband that sits high on the waist. The knit drops down in a wide, straight leg that moves freely without cling.
  • Care and drying. Hand wash or run on a gentle wool cycle in cold water. Lay both the sweater and trousers flat on a towel to dry so the knit retains its original shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Read the size chart on the partner page before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
