We knitted this two-piece set in a warm nutmeg tone, pairing a wide-neck pullover with fluid, wide-leg knit trousers. The sweater has a roomy cut that hangs away from the body, settling into a soft blouson at the waist. Long fine-rib cuffs anchor the sleeves so they stay put throughout the day.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Convertible wide neckline. We shaped the neckline wide across the collarbone so you can wear it straight across as a boat neck or pulled down over one shoulder. The rib finish along the edge holds its shape without puckering.
  • Sleeve and cuff gauge. The sleeves drop from a low shoulder into a softly rounded volume. Tightly knitted fine ribbing secures the wrist, keeping the excess fabric gathered neatly above the hand instead of falling forward.
  • Matching wide trousers. Knitted from the same yarn lot as the top, the trousers hang straight down through the leg. An elasticated waistband sits flat against the waist, giving the knit a fluid, uninterrupted line from hip to hem.
  • Washing and knit care. Hand wash both pieces together in cold water using a mild wool detergent so the nutmeg yarn stays uniform across top and bottom. Press out excess water with a clean towel and dry flat on a rack.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
