We knit this matching pair in deep black from a soft cotton-blend yarn with a plush, springy hand. The pullover sits loose through the body with dropped shoulders and side vents, while the trousers fall straight from a knit elastic waistband down to a wide cuff. Wear them together or break them apart across the colder months.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Quarter-zip convertible collar. The metal zipper pulls all the way up into a tall stand collar or opens flat across the shoulders. A ribbed neckband keeps its shape through regular wear.
  • Roomy pullover drape. Dropped shoulders give the sleeves extra volume before tapering down to ribbed cuffs. The body hangs away from the torso and finishes with split side vents at the hip.
  • Wide-leg knit trousers. We built the bottoms with a wide elasticated waistband that lies flat without binding. The legs fall straight and wide, giving the knit room to swing as you walk.
  • Washing and yarn care. Turn both pieces inside out and wash on a gentle cycle in cold water with mild soap. Lay them flat on a towel to dry so the heavy knit retains its length.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
