What we would tell you in the studio

  • Convertible collar construction. The metal quarter zip pulls up into a tall mock neck for cool mornings. Unzipped, the ribbed collar spreads open across the shoulders without losing its structure or bunching under the chin.
  • Top hem and sleeves. The sweater hem falls around the hip and features side vents so the fabric clears the trouser waistband without catching. Dropped shoulder seams lead into long sleeves finished with neat ribbed cuffs.
  • Wide trouser shape. We knit the pants with a generous leg that drops straight from the hip to the floor. The wide elastic waistband sits flat against the skin without twisting, knitted in the matching nutmeg tone.
  • Washing and yarn care. Thick knit pairs need gentle handling. Wash both pieces together in cold water inside a mesh laundry bag so the colour stays uniform across both garments. Lay them flat on a towel to dry.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
