What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crew neck and placket. The top closes down the front with buttons set into a clean placket. A plain round crew band finishes the neck, while vertical princess seams shape the body without pulling tight.
  • Trouser cut and pockets. We cut the trousers with a high rise and wide, straight legs that drop straight down from the hip. Inset welt pockets sit flat against the seam to keep the lines clean.
  • Drape and yarn feel. The knit surface is smooth and cool against bare skin, with enough body to resist creasing. It hangs with moderate weight and holds its outline without stretching out.
  • Care routine. Wash this set in cold water inside a mesh laundry bag to protect the button placket and pocket seams. Tumble dry on a low heat setting, or lay both pieces flat to dry.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Read the size chart on the partner page before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
