We knit this two-piece set in solid black, pairing an easy crew pullover with a straight maxi skirt. The cut hangs loose and away from the body from the shoulder to the lower hem. Both pieces share the same medium-weight yarn gauge, giving the pair an even weight throughout.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Top and skirt balance. The top is knit with a roomy body and long sleeves, falling naturally over the waistband of the matching skirt. Wearing both pieces together gives a uniform column of black knit from collar to ankle.
  • Straight maxi hem. The skirt hangs straight down the legs and lands near the ankle. Its knit construction holds enough natural stretch to let you step forward cleanly without pulling the lower hem out of shape across a day.
  • Black yarn hand. We chose a soft, blended yarn that stays plush against bare skin without feeling heavy. The dyed-black yarn holds a solid, deep tone across the entire set, matching across both the sweater and skirt.
  • Care and drying. Wash this set by hand in cool water, or run it through a delicate cycle. Press the excess water out with a towel and lay both pieces flat on a rack to dry so the knit retains its length.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
