What we would tell you in the studio

  • V-neck and button placket. The front opens into a modest V-neck that frames a collared shirt or sits flat against bare skin. Flat tortoiseshell buttons close the placket securely from the neckline down to the cropped rib hem.
  • Armhole and shoulder cut. We shaped the armholes to sit close without cutting into the shoulder. The cut gives steady coverage around the sides, keeping layers flat underneath without pulling the knit out of shape.
  • Dense fine-gauge knit. The yarn is spun for a smooth, non-scratch surface that holds its structure. It produces a compact, opaque fabric with enough weight to hang straight down the torso throughout the day.
  • Cold wash and flat dry. Hand wash this knit in cold water or use a gentle cycle with a laundry bag. Lay the vest flat to dry so the ribbed borders and shoulders retain their original shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Read the size chart on the partner page before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
