What we would tell you in the studio

  • Ribbed knit gauge. We work this in a heavier knit structure that gives the piece its coat-like body. The ribs run vertical to keep the fabric stable across the back and through the front panels.
  • Roomy outer cut. The body is cut wide so it hangs straight down without clinging to base layers. It leaves enough room through the chest and shoulders to slip easily over shirts or light sweaters.
  • Sleeve and hem lines. Long sleeves run straight to the wrist to balance the open front. The lower edge lands around the knee, giving good coverage without pulling tight when you walk.
  • Washing and care. Wash by hand or on a gentle cycle without bleach. Lay it flat across a drying rack so the weight of the damp yarn does not pull the hem out of shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Read the size chart on the partner page before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
