What we would tell you in the studio

  • V-neck and button placket. The front closes with engraved gold buttons along a reinforced knit placket. Leaving a few buttons open softens the line across the chest, letting a collared shirt or simple tank peek through underneath.
  • Fine gauge knit texture. We brushed the surface of this knit to produce a peached, soft hand that sits smoothly against bare skin. The knit fabric incorporates stretch so the body moves without bagging at the elbows or pulling tight across the back.
  • Straight hip length hem. The hem rests around the hip line in a clean, straight edge. It hangs freely without drawing in at the bottom, so it layers neatly over trousers, jeans, or high-waisted skirts without bunching.
  • Gentle wash and flat dry. Wash on a cold cycle or hand wash to protect the brushed finish of the yarn. Lay the cardigan flat on a towel in the shade to dry, which keeps the shoulders and button band from stretching out.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
