Short Sleeve Cardigan Sweaters for Women

We knit this short-sleeve cardigan with a straight cut that sits cleanly without pulling tight. The round crew neckline rests flat against the collarbone, and the hem stops short near the waistband. It works buttoned up as a light knit shirt or worn open over a tank.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crew neck and buttons. The round neckline is bound with narrow ribbing that keeps its shape. A tonal button placket runs straight down the front, giving you the choice to wear it closed or parted over another layer.
  • Cropped straight hem. The body falls straight through the torso and finishes in a short hem. It meets high-waisted trousers and skirts cleanly without bunching or needing to be tucked in.
  • Short sleeve cut. The short sleeves are knit with neat cuffs that sit off the shoulder. They provide light upper-arm coverage while leaving plenty of room to move in warm weather.
  • Washing and care. Hand wash in cold water or run on a gentle machine cycle with mild detergent. Avoid bleach, and lay the piece flat on a towel to dry so the knit retains its length.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Read the size chart on the partner page before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
