What we would tell you in the studio

  • Round crew neckline. The collar is bound with a flat knit rib that sits close to the base of the neck. It keeps its shape after washing and lies smooth under heavier jackets when worn as a base layer.
  • Roomy striped body. Horizontal stripes run continuously across the chest and down the long sleeves. The body is cut wide and loose, hanging straight down without clinging, while the knit retains enough stretch to recover after sitting.
  • Full length trouser hem. The bottoms are knitted in the same gauge and drape straight down to the ankle. The wide leg profile allows air to move freely around the calf, balancing the coverage of the long cut.
  • Drying and care. Wash the set together on a gentle cold cycle to keep the stripes consistent across both garments. Lay both the top and bottoms flat on a clean towel to dry so the long hem does not pull out of shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
