We cut this dress to trace the body through the torso before releasing into a long, asymmetrical hem. The deep burgundy ground carries a raised floral mesh, lined fully underneath so the pattern rests smooth against the skin. An open V-neck keeps the collarbone bare, balanced by an adjustable self tie at the waist.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • V-neck and waist tie. The open neckline finishes in a clean V that stays flat across the chest. At the waist, a matching fabric tie lets you draw the middle in or knot it loosely without disrupting the drape through the lower skirt.
  • Flocked mesh surface. We used a mesh base with raised velvet florals that add texture across the dark burgundy tone. The whole piece is lined with a smooth stretch fabric, keeping the mesh from clinging or rubbing while you move.
  • Asymmetrical long hem. The lower edge falls past the calf toward the ankle in an angled cut. It leaves room for an unhurried stride, while side pockets set into the seams stay flat until you use them.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash cold inside a mesh laundry bag, keeping it separate from pale loads to protect the deep burgundy dye. Skip the iron and tumble dryer, and lay the piece out flat on a towel to dry.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
