We shaped this two-piece set for cool weather, using a soft-touch stretch yarn in pale apricot. The long-sleeve top sits high at the neck and cuts straight through the body, while the matching skirt is knitted with structured pleats that hold their shape as you walk.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • High neck construction. The collar sits close around the throat in a ribbed fold that stays upright without sagging. It gives the top clean lines and blocks out drafts on colder mornings.
  • Pleated skirt shape. We knitted the skirt with deep vertical pleats that flare out toward the hem. The waistband sits flat and holds its position without twisting.
  • Straight body cut. The sweater falls in a straight line from the shoulder to a shorter hem. It rests off the body rather than hugging tightly, leaving room for a light base layer underneath.
  • Yarn care and wash. Hand wash the set in cool water with a mild knit detergent. Lay both pieces flat on a clean towel to dry so the skirt pleats stay crisp and the sleeves do not stretch out.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
