We cut these trousers wide through the leg and finished them with side slits for easy movement. The high waistband holds flat without digging, while the knit fabric hangs straight down away from the body. It packs down small and shakes out without heavy creases.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Wide leg with side slits. The leg profile stays roomy from the hip down to the hem. We added open side slits at the lower leg so the fabric breaks cleanly over shoes and stays airy as you walk.
  • High elastic waistband. The waistband sits high on the waist and uses encased elastic for a steady hold. It stays flat under tucked shirts or cropped pullovers without bunching up across the front.
  • Smooth wrinkle-resistant yarn. We chose a flexible synthetic blend yarn that rebounds when stretched and avoids deep wrinkles after hours in a bag. It feels cool against bare skin and keeps its shape after long wear.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash on a gentle cycle with cold water to protect the stretch recovery. Hang them to dry or lay them flat. The yarn dries fast and needs no ironing before you put it on.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
