Women's Oversized Fall Cardigan Sweater Chunky Jackets

We knit this open front cardigan with a heavy gauge yarn and a loose, relaxed cut. The deep V neckline angles down to a generous body that hangs away from the torso, while the long sleeves sit loosely down to ribbed cuffs. It works over basic t-shirts or thin knit tops on cooler days.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Heavy gauge knit. The chunky stitch gives the body noticeable weight and density without feeling rigid. It stretches and relaxes as you move, keeping cold drafts off your back.
  • Open V neckline. The front opens in a wide V shape down the center. Because there are no front fasteners, the panels rest naturally to the sides and stay clear of your base layer.
  • Roomy dropped sleeves. We dropped the shoulder seams so the long sleeves start lower on the arm. The extra width through the upper sleeve makes it easy to pull over collared shirts or long sleeves.
  • Washing and care. Hand wash in cold water to keep the chunky stitch from losing its shape. Gently press out excess water without twisting, then lay the cardigan flat on a dry towel to dry.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Read the size chart on the partner page before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
