A heavier gauge yarn gives this open front cardigan its substance. We shaped it with dropped shoulders, long sleeves, and a deep V neck that stays open over tees or collared shirts. The body hangs away from the torso and finishes with a broad hem band that rests comfortably past the hip line.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Chunky gauge knit. We work this piece in a thick, textured knit stitch with substantial body. The yarn provides natural give across the back and shoulders while keeping its relaxed structure throughout a full day of wear.
  • Open V neckline. The front opens in a wide V line that runs down to the lower hem. Because there are no buttons or fasteners, the front panels drape naturally and leave room for underlayers without bunching up at the chest.
  • Slouchy sleeve shape. We drop the shoulder seam low on the upper arm so the sleeves hang loose through the elbow. Ribbed cuffs gather the fabric at the wrist, keeping the extra sleeve length from falling over the hands.
  • Washing and shape care. Wash this piece by hand in cool water or have it dry cleaned to protect the knit texture. Squeeze out excess moisture without wringing the fabric, then dry it flat on a clean towel away from direct heat.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
