Making knitwear last past the first season
Most knit damage happens on the hanger and in the dryer, not on you. A short list of what actually matters.
Wash less than you think
Knit is not a shirt. Unless something was spilled, airing overnight does most of what a wash would do, and every wash is friction. When you do wash, cold and gentle, inside out, in a mesh bag if the yarn is loose.
The dryer is where sweaters go to shrink
Heat plus tumbling is how a knit becomes one size smaller and slightly felted, and it is not reversible. Dry flat, pushed back into shape while damp, away from a radiator. It takes a day and it costs nothing.
Fold, do not hang
A hanger holds the whole weight of a wet-heavy knit on two points at the shoulders, and those two points stretch out and stay stretched. Fold knitwear on a shelf. If you must hang something, fold it over the bar rather than putting it on the shoulders.
Pills and snags
Pills are friction, not failure, and a comb or a fabric shaver takes them off in ten minutes. A snag is a pulled loop: do not cut it. Work it back through to the inside with a blunt needle and the surface closes up again.
