How an oversized sweater is actually supposed to sit

The shoulder seam decides it

On a fitted knit the shoulder seam sits on the corner of your shoulder. On an oversized one it is meant to drop, but to a point you could still touch with a flat hand, roughly the top third of the upper arm. Past that the sleeve starts folding at the elbow and the whole piece reads as borrowed.

This is the single measurement we check first on a sample, before length and before body width, because it is the one nobody can fix at home.

Room across the body, not around it

A good oversized knit has room where you move and stays quiet where you do not. You want to be able to cross your arms without the back pulling, and you want the side seams to hang straight rather than swinging out into a bell.

If the piece stands away from your ribs on its own, that is not drape, that is volume with nowhere to go, and it adds width from the front.

Why sizing up usually goes wrong

The extra room is already drawn into the pattern. Taking the next size adds it again, on top, and the two do not stack politely: the neckline widens, the armhole drops past the point where a sleeve can hang, and the hem lands somewhere it was never meant to.

What to wear it against

Volume wants a straight line somewhere. Slim trousers, a straight skirt, anything with a defined edge underneath. Two loose pieces together works, but only when one of them is short enough to show where your body actually is.
