What we would tell you in the studio

  • Top and sleeve cut. The top is cut with a standard round crewneck and wide short sleeves. It falls away from the body in an easy boxy shape, ending in a cropped hem with small side slits.
  • Elastic waist short. The matching shorts pull on with a wide elastic waist that sits high. They fall wide through the leg openings so the knit does not cling or pull across the thigh.
  • Army green dye. We dyed both pieces in the same army green dye bath for an exact colour match across top and bottom. The earthy olive tone pairs easily with white canvas sneakers or leather slides.
  • Care and shape. Wash both pieces inside a mesh laundry bag on a gentle cycle with like colours. Lay them flat on a drying rack rather than hanging to keep the knit shorts from stretching lengthwise.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
