What we would tell you in the studio

  • Smocked chest and neckline. The square neck sits broad across the collarbone, framed by elasticated smocking through the bust. This gathered section holds close, allowing the lower body of the top to drape freely outward.
  • Ruffled shoulder straps. Wide knit straps are finished with small ruffled edges along both sides. They sit flat against the shoulders without digging, providing steady support for the smocked bodice.
  • Peplum waist release. Below the gathered chest panel, the knit drops loosely away from the torso. The cropped hem finishes high on the hip, leaving plenty of room for movement throughout the lower body.
  • Gentle cycle care. Wash cold on a gentle cycle inside a mesh laundry bag to protect the smocking and ruffled edges. Lay flat on a towel to dry so the lightweight knit holds its shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
