We cut these trousers with a wide leg that hangs straight down from the hip. The apricot cloth has a smooth finish and four-way stretch, pairing a tailored front with an elasticated rear waist. Front seams run down each leg to maintain the vertical line.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Waistband and front closure. A hidden button and zipper fly create a flat front placket. We added belt loops with small button accents, while the back waistband contains hidden elastic to give as you sit.
  • Leg cut and drape. The legs fall wide and loose from the hip down to the shoe. Front vertical seams keep the cloth aligned so the fabric drops cleanly without bunching.
  • Pocket construction. Deep side pockets sit along the hip seams to hold small items flat. The back features decorative welt pockets to keep the rear profile smooth.
  • Laundering and care. Wash cold in a mesh laundry bag on a gentle cycle. Lay the trousers flat to dry or tumble dry on low heat to keep the weave smooth.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
