What we would tell you in the studio

  • Mock neck top. A soft mock collar stands clear of the throat without folding over. Ribbing secures the cuffs and hem, and exposed seam detail runs down the back of the dropped-shoulder body.
  • Wide leg trousers. Knitted with an elastic waistband that lies flat against the waist. The legs fall straight and roomy to the hem, moving easily as you walk without clinging.
  • Yarn and drape. The medium-weight knit has a smooth surface and substantial drop. It holds its shape through hours of sitting while remaining gentle against bare skin.
  • Washing and care. Hand wash both pieces in cold water to preserve the dark dye and yarn texture. Press out excess moisture with a towel and lay flat to dry; do not tumble dry.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
