We knitted this two piece set in a rich chocolate brown, matching the yarn across both the sweater and the trousers. The pullover has a ribbed mock neck and dropped shoulders, while the wide leg pants hang straight from an elastic waist.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Ribbed mock neck. The stand collar uses fine ribbing that stays upright without folding over or clinging tight against the throat. Matching rib frames the wrist cuffs and bottom hem.
  • Roomy sweater cut. We cut the pullover loose through the chest and shoulders with an exposed center back seam. The hem falls past the hip, giving the piece substantial drape.
  • Straight wide leg. The trousers drop straight down from a soft elasticated waistband to a wide leg opening. Because we use the same knit throughout, the fabric falls smoothly to the floor.
  • Cold water care. Hand wash both pieces together in cold water to keep the brown dye uniform across the pair. Lay flat on a drying rack to protect the stitch shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
