We knit this tunic with a high, folded collar and a generous cut that sits away from the torso. The shoulders drop into long sleeves, giving the upper body plenty of room to move. The hem falls long through the back and opens with side slits to allow easy walking.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Folded high collar. The neck stands upright to cover the throat and folds over double for extra warmth. It holds its shape without pulling tightly against the skin.
  • Dropped sleeve construction. We placed the shoulder seam low on the arm to create a wide chest and unconstricted armholes. The sleeves taper down into ribbing at the wrists.
  • Split high-low hem. The bottom edge dips lower in the back and features open side vents. This break in the knit keeps the long tunic from catching when you sit or step.
  • Cold water care. Hand wash in cold water or run on a gentle machine cycle with mild detergent. Reshape the piece and lay it flat on a drying rack to protect the yarn.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Read the size chart on the partner page before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
