We knit this two-piece set from pure cotton yarn with a substantial, dense hand. The top has a plain round crew neck, long sleeves, and a front pocket, landing right at the hip. Down below, the trousers pull on with an elastic waist and taper down the leg, complete with side pockets. Both pieces are dyed together in deep navy.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Cotton rib knit. The dense cotton rib has weight without trapping heat. It sits cool against bare skin and holds its shape across hours of sitting, traveling, or resting at home.
  • Crewneck and pocket. The top is built with a simple crew neckline and a front pouch pocket set flat against the rib. It falls straight through the body to rest at the hip line.
  • Tapered pull-on trousers. We shaped the pants with a pull-on waist and side pockets. The legs taper toward the ankle rather than hanging wide, keeping the hem out of your way.
  • Wash and care. Hand wash in cool water or choose dry cleaning to keep the navy yarn dark and clear. Reshape both pieces while damp and dry them flat on a towel.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
