What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crew collar and shoulders. The pullover has a round crew neckline finished with a tidy band that sits flat against the collarbone. Dropped shoulders let the sleeves hang loose without pulling at the armholes.
  • Wide knit trouser legs. We gave the bottoms a wide cut that falls clean to the shoes. The knit has enough weight to keep its vertical line as you walk, rather than clinging to the knee.
  • Striped cotton-blend yarn. We spin this yarn from a blend of cotton and acrylic for a smooth, dry hand. The black and white stripes are knitted directly into the fabric rather than printed on top.
  • Washing and drying flat. Hand wash both pieces in cold water or use a gentle cycle with mild detergent. Reshape the top and trousers while damp, then lay them flat on a towel to dry.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
