What we would tell you in the studio

  • Roomy striped gauge. The horizontal stripes are worked directly into the knit. The body hangs free through the torso and down the legs, giving both pieces plenty of space to move without pulling.
  • Crew neck and long sleeves. A tidy round crew rib finishes the neck, while full length sleeves cover the wrists. The shoulders sit low, so the sleeves drop softly down the arm.
  • Wide leg trouser hem. The trousers are cut wide from the hip down. The hem lands long at the ankle, pairing easily with flat leather shoes or low trainers.
  • Cotton blend yarn care. Hand wash this set in cold water or dry clean it when needed. Press out excess water between towels and lay both pieces flat to dry so the knit keeps its shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
