What we would tell you in the studio

  • Off-shoulder neckline. The wide neck opening sits low across both shoulders without rolling up. It holds its position flat against the collarbone through a dense horizontal edge band.
  • Fine rib body. Ribbing runs vertically down the full length of the dress to give the fabric give and recovery. The knit expands where needed and returns to its narrow shape.
  • Full length sleeves. Long sleeves follow the arm straight down to narrow cuffs that stay at the wrist. The fabric remains light enough to slide into coat sleeves without bunching.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash cold inside a mesh laundry bag to protect the fine rib surface. Lay the piece flat on a drying rack to keep the length from stretching out.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
