What we would tell you in the studio

  • Smocked bodice construction. The upper panel uses close rows of elastic gathering to grip the torso without interior boning or straps. Small ruffled edges finish the top and bottom borders of the smocking, giving the chest band clean definition.
  • Tiered skirt volume. Four separate panels form the skirt, each gathered into the seam above it. This stepping adds horizontal breaks and allows the lower hem to move freely around your ankles as you walk.
  • Inseam pocket placement. We set deep side pockets directly into the side seams of the skirt. They sit flat against the hip when empty so the tiered silhouette keeps its natural shape.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash cold in a mesh laundry bag to protect the smocked elastic threads from snagging. Lay the piece flat on a drying rack or tumble dry on low heat.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
