We built this piece with an elastic smocked bodice that holds close without straps. Below the band, four gathered tiers release into a long skirt that hangs well away from the body down to the ankle. Side pockets sit flat in the seams.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Smocked bodice grip. Elastic smocking across the bust creates a close, stretchy band finished with a small ruffle along the top edge. It stays up on its own through ordinary movement without pulling or slipping down.
  • Tiered skirt volume. Four separate tiers are gathered into horizontal seams, widening steadily toward the lower hem. The woven drape falls straight to the ankle and sways lightly around your legs as you walk.
  • Side seam pockets. Two deep pockets are set directly into the side seams below the smocking. They sit flat when empty so the tiered lines of the skirt remain clean and undisturbed.
  • Wash and care. Wash cold on a gentle cycle in a mesh bag to protect the smocking threads. Lay flat to dry or dry on low heat so the tiered seams keep their shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
