What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crewneck and side slits. The top is cut with a standard round crewneck that lies flat against the collarbone. Side slits at the hip keep the hem from catching when you sit, letting the fabric hang clear of the trousers.
  • Roomy wide leg cut. We gave the trousers a wide leg shape that falls straight from the waist to the hem. Inset side pockets sit flat along the seams without adding bulk to the line of the knit.
  • Lightweight knit hand. The yarn is spun fine for a soft, light feel that stays easy against bare skin. It drapes loosely rather than clinging, which keeps the full set comfortable through a full day of wear.
  • Washing and flat drying. Machine wash the top and trousers in cool water on a gentle cycle, or dry clean them. Lay both pieces flat on a clean towel to dry so the knit retains its original shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
