What we would tell you in the studio

  • Wide leg structure. The leg drops straight from the hip down to a wide hem. Dense knitting gives the fabric enough weight to hang cleanly without clinging to the knee or bunching as you walk.
  • Waistband and closure. The front waist sits flat with a zip fly and button closure for a tailored look. Across the back, enclosed elastic gives the band give when you sit down.
  • Deep inset pockets. Two deep pockets are set right into the side seams. They stay flat against the hip when empty and hold a phone or card case without distorting the line of the trousers.
  • Cold water care. Machine wash in cold water inside a mesh laundry bag to protect the knit surface. Tumble dry on low heat or lay flat across a drying rack so the legs keep their shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
