We cut these navy trousers with a wide leg and enough stretch to give across a full day of movement. The waistband hides an elastic insert on the inside while maintaining a tailored front with a zip fly and hook-and-bar closure. They fall straight from the hip into a relaxed, roomier leg line.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Wide leg cut. The legs drop wide from the hip down through the opening, giving the fabric room to drape straight. It moves easily during a commute without clinging or feeling heavy.
  • Concealed stretch waist. We built the elastic into the interior of the waist band. The outside keeps a flat tailored line, secured by a front zip fly and a hidden hook-and-bar closure.
  • Lightweight stretch fabric. The woven cloth carries give through the yarn so the trousers flex when you sit or bend. Navy yarn gives the surface a clean, uniform finish across the panels.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle or wash by hand. Tumble dry on low heat or line dry, and use a cool iron if the legs need pressing.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
