We shaped these wide-leg trousers from a lightweight stretch fabric that avoids the stiffness of standard suiting. The hidden elastic waistband stays flexible while keeping a smooth front with a hook-and-bar closure. They fall straight from the hip into a wide hem.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Wide leg cut. The fabric drops straight and roomy through the leg to give you space to move. The wide hem creates a clean line over flats, loafers, or low heels.
  • Concealed elastic waist. We built hidden stretch into the waistband so it flexes through sitting and walking. A hook-and-bar closure and zip fly keep the exterior waistband looking flat and tailored.
  • Lightweight stretch cloth. The woven fabric is lightweight with added give across the grain. It holds its shape without feeling heavy during warm commutes or full workdays.
  • Cold water care. Machine wash in cold water or hand wash to protect the stretch yarn. Tumble dry on low heat or hang dry, and press with a cool iron if needed.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
