We knit this mini dress with a wide boat neck that sits across the collarbone or draws down over one shoulder. The upper body is cut roomy with a dropped armhole, gathering into an elasticated waist. Below the waist, a close ribbed skirt holds the hem short.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Convertible wide neckline. The broad neckline rests flat as a boat neck or shifts to the side to sit off the shoulder. It is finished with a low-profile edge that stays in place without rolling.
  • Full lantern sleeves. We dropped the shoulder seam and widened the sleeve through the forearm for a loose lantern shape. Long ribbed cuffs pull the volume back in at the wrist so the fabric stays put.
  • Ribbed mini skirt. A fine gauge ribbed knit runs through the lower half of the dress, giving the short skirt plenty of horizontal stretch. The knit recovers its shape after hours of sitting.
  • Yarn and washing. This lightweight yarn feels smooth and cool against bare skin. Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent and lay it flat on a clean towel to dry so the knit does not stretch out.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
