What we would tell you in the studio
- Diagonal rib stitch. The stitch runs on the bias across the front and back panels. This diagonal direction gives the yarn a natural slant, creating an asymmetric drape that moves away from the body as you walk.
- Folded turtleneck. A deep rib finishes the high collar. It sits upright around the neck without pulling tight, holding its structure through repeated wear and keeping out drafts on windy days.
- Batwing long sleeves. The armholes drop low from the body panel to create a broad batwing shape. Below the elbow, the knit narrows into a snug ribbed sleeve that stays pushed up on the forearm.
- Washing and shape. Hand wash in cool water or dry clean to protect the knitted slant. Press out excess water with a flat towel and dry horizontally so the asymmetric points do not stretch out of shape.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
