What we would tell you in the studio
- Asymmetric ribbed body. The diagonal ribbing runs across the body to create a sharp, angled lower edge. Because the cut is wide, the knit drapes in deep folds from the low underarm down past the hips.
- High ribbed collar. A folded turtleneck stands upright around the throat without clinging tight. We use a vertical rib here to balance the diagonal lines across the chest and shoulders.
- Fitted lower sleeve. The batwing cut leaves plenty of room through the shoulder and upper arm, then narrows sharply below the elbow. This narrower wrist holds the sleeve in place when you raise your hands.
- Drying and care. Wash by hand in cool water or dry clean to protect the angle of the hem. Press the water out with a towel and lay the knit flat across a drying rack so the weight does not pull the diagonal stitches out of line.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
