What we would tell you in the studio

  • Exposed seam lines. We brought the join work to the outside of the knit. These raised seams run along the dropped shoulders and down the torso, breaking up the flat surface of the black body.
  • Split hemline. The hem drops past the waist with open side vents. This split lets the front and back panels hang cleanly over trousers or skirts rather than catching when you sit.
  • Long straight sleeves. The sleeves fall long from a wide shoulder seam and finish in narrow vertical ribbing. That rib holds the wrist in place if you push the sleeve up along your forearm.
  • Cold water washing. Hand wash this knit in cold water or use a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Skip the bleach and lay the sweater flat on a drying rack so the heavy panels keep their shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
