We built this maxi dress from a lightweight flocked mesh over a smooth stretch lining. The cut hangs loose and away from the frame, running into tiered ruffles that gather weight near the ankle. An open halter neck anchors the top while the long sleeves keep the line balanced.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Flocked floral mesh. The outer shell uses a fine mesh base patterned with raised flocked flowers in deep brown. Underneath, a full stretch lining provides coverage while letting the textured surface sit proud.
  • Halter neckline. The open halter neck leaves the shoulders bare while anchoring the bodice securely. It balances the generous drape through the lower tiers, keeping the top half grounded without pulling tight across the chest.
  • Tiered ruffle hem. Horizontal seams through the skirt form soft tiers that widen toward the lower hem. The fabric falls below the knee down to the ankle, moving freely as you walk because the cut avoids a close fit.
  • Care and washing. Wash cold on a gentle cycle inside a mesh laundry bag to protect the raised flocking. Avoid bleach, tumble drying, and irons. Lay the dress flat to dry so the tiers keep their shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
