We built this maxi with a flocked floral mesh overlay set over a smooth stretch lining. The neckline stays open at the collar, while long sleeves balance the full length of the tiered skirt. It falls in a roomy column down to the ankle.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Flocked floral mesh. The outer layer uses a lightweight mesh worked with raised floral flocking for tactile surface detail. A soft stretch lining sits underneath to provide solid coverage while letting the dark pattern keep its definition.
  • Cut and drape. We shaped this piece with an open halter-style neck and long sleeves. Tiered ruffles step down the length of the skirt, creating an unrestrictive shape that hangs straight and loose from the shoulders to the ankle.
  • Layering and styling. The solid black tone pairs naturally with heeled sandals, low leather shoes, or a fine knit wrap on cooler evenings. The textured surface provides enough detail to wear on its own without extra bulk.
  • Care and wash. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, preferably inside a mesh laundry bag to protect the raised flocking. Lay it flat to dry instead of using heat, and skip the iron entirely to protect the mesh.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
