We cut this dress with a halter neckline and long tiered ruffles that drop down to the ankle. The outer shell uses a lightweight mesh with raised flocked florals over a stretch lining. The burgundy shade runs deep throughout the fabric layers, sitting loosely away from the body without pulling.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Halter neck and tiers. The halter neckline leaves the shoulders bare while tiered ruffle panels cascade down the length of the skirt. The roomy shape hangs clear of the torso down to an ankle-grazing hem.
  • Flocked mesh texture. We paired an outer layer of lightweight floral mesh with a smooth stretch lining underneath. Soft, raised flocked flowers add physical texture across the burgundy base without adding heavy bulk.
  • Long drape and line. The skirt falls straight and loose, relying on the weight of the stacked ruffles to create movement as you walk. The inner lining moves with the outer mesh to keep the skirt hanging evenly.
  • Cold water washing. Wash on a cold cycle in a mesh laundry bag to protect the raised floral flocking. Lay it flat to dry instead of using heat, and skip the iron entirely to keep the texture intact.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
