We cut this maxi dress from a lightweight floral mesh backed by a soft, stretchy lining. The shape sits away from the body, opening up at the halter neck and stepping down in gathered tiers to a long hemline. The grey blue tone softens the dimensional surface pattern.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Tiered cut and hem. The body falls freely in gathered tiers down to the lower ankle. Because the cut does not hug the waist, the fabric hangs straight from the neckline and moves with an open swing as you walk.
  • Flocked mesh texture. The outer shell uses a raised floral pattern with a velvet hand over sheer mesh. Beneath it, a smooth base fabric provides coverage and gives the dress enough weight to drape cleanly.
  • Halter neckline. The halter neckline leaves the shoulders bare and secures at the back of the neck. It balances the volume through the tiered skirt, keeping the upper frame clear for warm evenings or layered wraps.
  • Cold wash care. Machine wash cold inside a mesh laundry bag to protect the raised pattern. Skip the dryer, bleach, and iron, and lay the garment flat to dry so the tiers keep their shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
