We knit this long-sleeve top with an open crossover V-neck that fastens off-center with two wooden buttons. The vertical ribbing adds give through the body, which hangs loose and finishes with a cropped hem. It works worn on its own against skin or layered under a heavier jacket.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Asymmetrical neckline. The front panels cross over into a deep V-neck, secured at the side with two small wooden buttons. The neckline stays open and sits flat against the collarbone without pulling.
  • Textured vertical rib. The fine vertical ribs run the length of the body and sleeves. This knit structure gives the fabric natural mechanical stretch so it moves easily when you reach or bend, then springs back.
  • Cropped hemline. The hem is cut short, ending near the waistband of high-rise trousers or skirts. Because the body sits roomy and hangs away from the torso, the bottom edge stays loose instead of gripping.
  • Yarn and washing. The medium-gauge yarn is smooth against the skin and resists surface fuzzing. Wash on a gentle cycle in cool water and lay the top flat to dry so the ribbed structure keeps its shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
