What we would tell you in the studio

  • Ribbed top cut. The top hangs away from the torso in a loose drape, cut with long sleeves and an open V-neck. Its shorter hem meets the high rise of the pants without bunching.
  • Wide trouser leg. Knitted with an elastic waistband and an adjustable cord, the pants drop straight and wide to the hem. Two inset side pockets sit flat along the hip seam.
  • Black ribbed yarn. The fine rib adds horizontal stretch across both pieces while holding its vertical line. We dye the yarn deep black before knitting to keep the tone uniform across top and bottom.
  • Launder and care. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle to protect the fine rib structure. Tumble dry on low heat, or lay both pieces flat on a rack to retain their shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
