What we would tell you in the studio

  • Off shoulder neckline. The wide, open neckline sits across the shoulders without a collar band. It stays flat against the skin and frames the neck, balanced by the full coverage of the long set-in sleeves.
  • Ruched torso construction. Gathering along the side seam draws the fabric horizontally across the middle. This keeps the knit flexible through the torso while holding a close line down to the hips.
  • Ruffled lower hem. Below the knee, the skirt opens with a side slit and finishes in a high-low ruffle that lands near the ankle. The hemline has extra sweep so the fabric swings clear of your feet as you walk.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash cold inside a mesh laundry bag, keeping darks separate to protect the solid black yarn. Lay the dress flat across a drying rack so the weight of the damp hem does not pull the knit out of shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
