What we would tell you in the studio
- Asymmetric neckline. The one-shoulder cut sits off the shoulder on one side while staying anchored on the other. It leaves the neck and collarbone clear for simple jewellery or bare skin.
- Side ruching. Gathered seams along the waist and hip create horizontal folds through the body of the knit. This construction gives the fabric mechanical give across the midsection as you sit or walk.
- High low ruffle hem. The skirt opens into a side slit and finishes with an uneven ruffled hem. The knit falls longer in the back and moves freely around the ankles when you step.
- Cold wash care. Machine wash cold in a mesh laundry bag with similar brown tones. Lay the knit flat on a towel to dry so the ruffled hem and gathered seams keep their shape.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
