What we would tell you in the studio

  • Waist and pull-on fit. An elastic waistband sits flat without buttons, hooks, or a zipper. It pulls on directly and holds its position without bunching, while faux welt pockets at the back keep the rear line flat and smooth.
  • Fabric and drape. The polyester-spandex blend yields a fluid drape with enough weight to maintain the straight leg shape. It resists wrinkling through repeated wear and packs flat without taking hard creases.
  • Wide leg geometry. The leg runs straight from the hip down to the hem, leaving plenty of room around the thighs and calves. A central vertical crease runs down each leg to maintain the vertical line.
  • Laundering and care. Wash on a gentle cycle in cold water using a mesh laundry bag to protect the fabric surface. Tumble dry on low heat and remove promptly to keep the center crease intact.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
