We shaped these trousers with a wide leg that hangs straight and loose from the waistband down to the hem. The stretch fabric holds a clean press while moving easily as you walk. An elastic section at the back of the waist keeps the rise sitting right where you set it.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Wide leg drape. The leg falls straight from the upper thigh down to a wide open hem. It hangs away from the calf and ankle, giving the trousers a clean downward line when standing or walking.
  • Waist and closure. We combined a clean front zipper fly with an elastic section at the waistband. This gives the trousers structure through the rise while allowing the waist to flex comfortably through a full day.
  • Side pockets. Two functional inset pockets sit along the side seams without breaking the line of the hip. They stay flat against the leg when empty and carry small everyday items easily.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with like colours. Tumble dry on low heat or hang on a line to dry, and use a cool iron if you want to sharpen the front crease.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
