What we would tell you in the studio

  • Wide convertible neckline. The broad collar band stretches across the collarbones. You can pull it down over both shoulders, tip it to one side, or leave it sitting wide across the neck without pulling.
  • Batwing sleeve construction. We cut the sleeves loose from a low armhole so the cloth drapes freely through the upper body. The fabric then tapers down into a fitted lower arm that stays pushed up when wanted.
  • Ruched cropped hem. Side gathering pulls the fabric in at the waist, stopping the hem high on the hip. This gives the roomy chest section a steady anchor point so the top stays put as you move.
  • Yarn hand and care. The caramel knit uses a fine, smooth spun yarn that resists creasing during wear. Hand wash in cold water or run on a gentle cycle in a mesh bag, then lay flat to dry to keep the gathered seams aligned.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
