What we would tell you in the studio

  • Convertible open neckline. The wide neck opening stretches easily. You can center it as a broad boatneck or tug it down across one shoulder so the fabric gathers asymmetrically along the collarbone.
  • Roomy batwing sleeves. The sleeves cut wide from a dropped armhole, tapering down the forearm into narrow wrists. That extra ease under the arm keeps the chest relaxed without pulling at the neckline as you move.
  • Ruched side hem. Gathers along the lower side seams draw the volume inward, so the cropped hem catches at the waist rather than billowing out. It stays put over mid-rise and high-rise bottoms.
  • Yarn hand and care. This fine-gauge khaki knit feels smooth, soft, and light against bare skin. Wash on a gentle cycle in cold water with similar shades, then lay the knit flat to dry to keep the gathers intact.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
